Patients suffering from sinus disease have often heard from friends or family about traditional sinus surgery that was painful, required extensive nasal packing and significant time off work or school. After hearing these stories, it is understandable that one would avoid sinus surgery. Fortunately, balloon sinuplasty offers significant improvement in sinus disease, with minimal to no pain, no packing and minimal recovery time.
Sinusitis is the inflammation of the lining of the paranasal sinuses. Sinuses are air-filled pockets that drain into the nose. When these drainage passages are narrow or swollen shut, fluid fills up in the sinuses, which then becomes infected. Symptoms include facial pain, nasal congestion, nasal discharge, headache, post-nasal drip and fatigue.
The minimally invasive, balloon sinuplasty technique uses a small wire that is introduced through the nose and into the sinus. A balloon is then guided over the wire and expanded along the narrow opening of the sinus in order to widen this opening. Studies have shown most patients are still enjoying significantly less sinus disease after 2 years. All of this can be achieved in the office, with return to work the very next day.
